As the owner of a local business, you need very specific strategies to make the internet work. Using your web site as an electronic catalogue is not enough.

To really make the breakthrough you need to harness every aspect of the internet and combine it with your more traditional promotion methods.

Most internet designers and marketers will tell you that successful promotion on the internet is a numbers game.

  • Drive as much traffic as possible to your web site
  • Convert as many as possible of them into paying customers
  • Run to the bank!

However, you need discover different strategies when trying to shake up your local buyers. There simply is not enough of them to use traditional web marketing methods.

What Sells on the Web?

Just take a look at eBay sometime.....

But however you make your money, rather than trying to sell from the web site, you need to persuade local visitors to phone in with an enquiry or, better still, turn up on your doorstep ready to buy so that you can clinch the deal.

If you do this right, you can sell a much wider range of products. Thousands of people are prepared to buy books or CD's from Amazon and the like, but how many people do you suppose are likely to purchase a new bathroom suite from a web site?

Not many, you think?

Here's a surprise.....

If you are selling bathroom suites, you can get a huge amount of information in front of a prospect on your web site.

Will it fit his bathroom?
Show him the exact dimensions.
   
How much plumbing will he have to do?
Show him exactly where the taps and waste connections are.
   
What about colours?
Show him the full range of colour options.

Questions, Questions

Even if he thinks of questions you have never heard before, he can e-mail you right there and then while they're on his mind. Just make sure you get back to him!

Think Beyond Traditional

Using traditional promotion methods, local businesses can't compete with the nationals.

You can't afford

  • full page ads in the press or
  • a colour brochure through every letterbox in town.

But you can afford

  • a professional looking web site,
  • and if you use it correctly you will see results.

I can almost guarantee this, because I have built a number of sites for small family businesses and have not yet had one fail to earn it's keep.

O.K. so that guy over in the corner is your in-house geek, but he's never built a web site and doesn't have time to any way.

Try it. You may be surprised at the results.

Just bear in mind that a poorly executed web site may work against you. Especially if the competitor over the street has a better one.
